This piece flips the old “Don’t Tread on Me” symbol on its head — literally. The Statue of Liberty rises up and stomps on the Gadsden snake, reclaiming the phrase for those who believe in freedom, equality, and justice for all.
Commissioned by a woman disheartened by the surge of “Don’t Tread on Me” flags and stickers now used to mask anger and division, she wanted a depiction of what most Americans should agree on — that liberty means freedom from oppression, hate, and violence.
Her words say it best (edited for flow):
“I’ve been disheartened by the rise in ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ stickers, flags, and even state license plates. I’ve felt increasingly tread upon myself, and I wanted to see an image that reflects what we — as Americans — should truly stand for. Jeni captured that perfectly.”
Liberty wears her message loud and clear:
Across her crown are the values worth defending — Free Speech. No to Fascism. Equality. Freedom. End Gun Violence. Better Together.
And on the sole of her sandal, the retort that started it all: DON’T TREAD ON ME EITHER.
